My earliest experiments with the photographic process began in a damp Fenland boarding school studio and after a family move to the USA continued a short while later in a darkroom-cum-closet in a Manhattan apartment. After the experience of an English boarding school my voyages through late 1960's New York street scenes fundamentally altered my perspective of the world.

After numerous searchings and certain false starts in New York and nearby Princeton I returned to University in the UK in 1974. A four year mini-career in London publishing gave me the opportunity to meet numerous successful photographers and to confirm that this was indeed what I wanted to do with my own life.

I opened the doors to my London studio in the early 1980s, taking the plunge into the world of commercial photography, even though working outdoors has always been a passion, whether it was the countless trips to Italy or to photograph people, places and things, taking the world as I find it, albeit with a little tinkering.

After years of regular commissioned work which made my own projects take a back seat, I now have the luxury of more time for my own explorations. Much of this involves printing work that has languished in negative boxes, but new projects still figure prominently. "Roads to Rome" is to a degree a summary of twenty years' work in Italy, but I am not in the habit of looking back without also giving equal emphasis to present and future projects which will regularly feature in my new Gallery pages.

I continue to write as well as photograph in the hope of producing a cogent document of my passage through this precious life. Digital images, large format film work, words, video, Polaroid and travels all blend in this endeavour, but apart from book projects, the production of high quality prints is now my priority and the presentation of a handful of arresting images can sometimes be as rewarding as the more exhaustive documentation of the few short decades most of us are fortunate enough to enjoy here.
