Aqueduct
Almost as important as the roads themselves, the structures
that carried vital water supplies can still be seen
in several parts of Italy, here near the ancient settlements
around Citavecchia.
Paradiso
A lonely tanker skirts the Tuscan coast, passing between
the Three Stars and Paradise on its way to Genoa. Meanwhile,
Viareggio’s holiday stageset awaits another summer
fantasy.
Pisa
Twenty years ago the area around Pisa had many derelict
factories, warehouses and mills, many of which have
since been pulled down to make way for a wave of new
industrial parks, with their buildings finished in dark
glass, polished metal and primary colours.
Taggia bridge
Known locally as the Roman bridge,
the 16-span, 850-foot (260-metre) pedestrian bridge
across the Argentina River is actually Romanesque. It
nevertheless provides a graphic contrast to the elevated
Via Aurelia autostrada in the background.
